Understanding Trauma

What are Examples of Trauma?

These traumatic events include:
  • Any trauma related to childhood (Neglect or abuse).

  • Any physical, mental, or emotional abuse.

  • Living with an addict or a family member with mental illness.

  • Sudden, unexplained separation of a loved one.

  • Death of a loved one.

  • Poverty (financial crisis).

  • Racism or discrimination.

  • Violence, war, or terrorism.

According to some studies, about 70% of adults experience some trauma, and approximately 33% of children and youth are exposed to some violence that leads to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many people experience different kinds of trauma and are coping with its mental and physical symptoms. Dealing with trauma can be challenging and demanding for the patient and the family. But with the help of different therapies, it can be cured.

“While not all trauma survivors experience long-term negative consequences, we know that the experience of trauma can profoundly affect someone’s psychological, social, physical, occupational, and financial functioning.”

The Essentials of Trauma Therapy

What is Trauma Therapy?

Talking about trauma and its variety among people, it can be very different in children, young adults, adults, and older adults. The psychological, physiological, neurological, and social aspects vary from person to person. Therefore, the therapist designs the treatment protocols on an individual basis. It can be psychotherapy like cognitive behavioral therapy or counseling. Trauma therapy aims to provide mental and physical relaxation and help the person live peacefully without any episodes of unwanted symptoms.

Many therapies aim to help the child, adolescent, and adult survivors heal from the traumatic event. There are three types of trauma; the patients are dealing with:

  • ACUTE TRAUMA

Acute trauma is a single traumatic event like a sexual assault, disaster, or accident.

  • CHRONIC TRAUMA

Chronic trauma is defined as multiple episodes of any traumatic event and dealing with long-term events like violence, bullying, neglect, sexual abuse, or suffering from an illness for a long time.

  • COMPLEX TRAUMA

Complex trauma deals with multiple traumatic events at one time, like sexual abuse, childhood abuse, and domestic violence.

Diverse Approaches for Treating Trauma

Types of Trauma Therapy

There are many therapies Rolling Hills Recovery Center provides to help patients deal with acute or chronic trauma, providing countless benefits to the patients and helping them live every day, stress-free lives. While there are numerous therapy approaches, the purpose of all trauma-focused therapy is to integrate the traumatic event into your life, not subtract it.

People dealing with psychological symptoms of trauma are fighting inside with themselves, their fears, and their guilt. Trauma therapy helps them embrace positivity and divert their minds from negative thoughts and stressful sensations.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as Talk Therapy, deals with talking and is one of the most effective types of treatment in patients with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therapists assist the patient in managing and eliminating their mental and physical symptoms. In this therapy, mental health professionals will guide patients as they talk through their problems and traumatic memories.

The doctors and the patient talk through their problems and traumatic experiences daily and provide the opportunity to share their probe concerns and open up without hesitation.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on the thoughts and behaviors of the person by providing mental support to change the thinking pattern. Cognitive behavioral therapy works best for children, adolescents, adult survivors, and families and aims to help address emotional and mental health needs and unhealthy behavior patterns. Due to its trauma-focus, this type of therapy is practiced with more sensitivity toward post-traumatic stress and mood disorders which are consequences of guilt and abuse.

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is a short-term intervention that usually lasts eight to twenty-five sessions. In these sessions, the therapists provide family group therapies to encourage communication, which helps bond and ease the severity of traumatic episodes.

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT)

This type of therapy includes thinking positively and changing the thoughts and feelings about certain stressful events. Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) helps to challenge and modify unrelated and negative thoughts and beliefs. Cognitive processing therapy helps teach patients new, more positive ways of addressing trauma-related ideas and emotions.

Group therapy

Various groups support and care for the victims and survivors of the trauma. Some groups are educational, and some are for therapeutic purposes. Choosing group therapy can be more beneficial than individual therapy. The trauma survivors can select a group for initiating their healing journey.

  • Safety/Victim phase:

Choose a group that focuses on self-care and coping skills.

  • Remembering/Survivor phase:

Select a group that deals with trauma-telling stories.

  • Reconnection/Thrive phase:

Join a group that makes a connection with others.

  • Educational:

Educational groups are applicable during all phases.

Hypnotherapy

There are no guiding protocols in practicing hypnotherapy. In this therapy, a hypnotherapist guides the patient into a hypnotic state and encourages them to speak up and engage in conversation about the trauma or any incident. Most hypnotherapists believe that the emotions and thoughts that an individual comes into contact with while under hypnosis are crucial to healing.
